Which of the following gases is formed when zinc reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid?

  1. (A) N2
  2. (B) H2
  3. (C) SO2
  4. (D) CO2
Show answerHide answer

Correct answer: (B) H2

Metal + dilute acid → salt + hydrogen (lesson 7).

Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)

An ore of zinc is—

  1. (A) Bauxite
  2. (B) Sodium chloride
  3. (C) Cinnabar
  4. (D) Zinc blende
Show answerHide answer

Correct answer: (D) Zinc blende

Zinc blende (ZnS) is the sulphide ore of zinc; it is roasted to ZnO. Bauxite = aluminium, cinnabar = mercury.

The metal which dissolves only in aqua regia is—

  1. (A) Fe
  2. (B) Cu
  3. (C) Au
  4. (D) Al
Show answerHide answer

Correct answer: (C) Au

Aqua regia = conc. HCl : conc. HNO₃ = 3 : 1. It dissolves gold (Au) and platinum, which neither acid can do alone.

Which of the following is not an ionic compound?

  1. (A) CaCl2
  2. (B) CO
  3. (C) KCl
  4. (D) HCN
Show answerHide answer

Correct answer: (B) CO

CaCl₂ and KCl are ionic (metal + non-metal). In CO both are non-metals — electrons are shared, no ions form. Note: HCN is not ionic either; two options look correct in the paper, so we have taken the most direct answer, (b) CO.

The hardest natural substance is—

  1. (A) Iron
  2. (B) Gold
  3. (C) Silver
  4. (D) Diamond
Show answerHide answer

Correct answer: (D) Diamond

Diamond, an allotrope of carbon, is the hardest natural substance, with very high melting and boiling points (lesson 3, exceptions to Table 3.1).

Which of the following are electronegative?

  1. (A) Non-metals
  2. (B) Metals
  3. (C) Alloy
  4. (D) None of these
Show answerHide answer

Correct answer: (A) Non-metals

Non-metals gain electrons to form anions — electronegative. Metals lose electrons to form cations — electropositive.

Which of the following pairs represents a single displacement reaction?

  1. (A) NaCl solution and copper metal
  2. (B) MgCl2
  3. (C) FeSO4
  4. (D) AgNO3
Show answerHide answer

Correct answer: (D) AgNO3

Copper is more reactive than silver, so it displaces Ag. In the other pairs the metal is less reactive.

Cu(s) + 2AgNO3(aq) → Cu(NO3)2(aq) + 2Ag(s)

Cuprite is an ore of which of the following metals?

  1. (A) Hg
  2. (B) Zn
  3. (C) Cu
  4. (D) Al
Show answerHide answer

Correct answer: (C) Cu

Cuprite = Cu₂O, an oxide ore of copper.

Which of the elements shown by these symbols (mass number/atomic number) is a metal?

  1. (A) A (19/9)
  2. (B) B (24/12)
  3. (C) C (12/6)
  4. (D) D (16/8)

Correct answer: (B) B (24/12)

Atomic number 12 = magnesium (2,8,2) — 2 outer electrons, a metal. 9 = fluorine, 6 = carbon, 8 = oxygen — non-metals.

What is the process of roasting?

Show answerHide answer

Roasting: heating a sulphide ore strongly in excess air to change it into its oxide. Example — zinc blende:

2ZnS(s) + 3O2(g) heat→ 2ZnO(s) + 2SO2(g)

The oxide is then reduced with carbon: ZnO(s) + C(s) → Zn(s) + CO(g)

Why do metals have a tendency to lose electrons and form cations?

Show answerHide answer
  • A metal has only 1, 2 or 3 electrons in its outer shell.
  • By losing them it reaches the previous full shell (a stable octet); this is much easier than gaining 5–7 electrons.
  • After losing electrons, protons outnumber electrons, so a cation forms: Na (2,8,1) → Na⁺ (2,8) + e⁻; Mg (2,8,2) → Mg²⁺ (2,8) + 2e⁻.
